A Barefoot Dream

Summary

After a series of pipe-dream ventures go belly up, a retired football player happens to visit East Timor, where barefoot children play football on rocky pitches. There he gets another business idea: selling football shoes to kids. East Timor has no sporting goods stores, so he would have a monopoly. But since no one there can afford to pay US$60 for a pair of shoes, he finds himself spending all day chasing away flies. His last sales pitch, a two-month installment plan, lands him in a dusty playground as a coach for ragged 10-year-olds. And there begins a heartening experience for him.
